Call to reduce telecommunications tax

During a meeting with President Danilo Medina held yesterday, Monday 3 June, the telecommunications sector repeated its request to the government for a gradual reduction in the 10% tax that was introduced in 2004.

For every RD$100, the companies in the sector have to pay RD$30 in tax, which the vice president of Orange Dominicana, Eduardo Valcarcel, says is too high.

According to Valcarcel, getting rid of this tax would allow them better access to communication with their clients and he said when the tax was introduced in 2004, it was supposed to be temporary and as a reaction to the economic situation affecting the country at the time.

However, he went on to say that they were planning to invest US$100 million in the country this year, but probably would not do so, due to the economic situation.

Claro Dominicana president Oscar Pena and the president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) Carlos Amarante Baret were also present at the annual telecommunications sector meeting.
