Fire in Bavaro

A fire broke out yesterday, Monday 3 June, at a tourist shopping center on Bavaro’s Avenida Espana.

The fire started at 9am, apparently due to a short circuit in an air conditioning system in one of the shops. By the time the fire was put out, seven shops including a local restaurant had been burned down.

The plaza was made of local materials, including cane roofs and was visited daily by tourists shopping for local art and gifts.

Three fire engines arrived on the scene, including one from Punta Cana airport. Representatives of the Civil Defense, National Police, Tourist Police and the local authorities confirmed that there were no injuries although some of the owners and salespeople from the stores suffered from smoke inhalation after trying to rescue their stock.
