The first cultural summer camp aimed at Dominican-American children will be held from July 8 to July 20, in the historic vacation farm of former Dominican president Joaquin Balaguer, in Guiagui, near the city of La Vega.
Campamento Raices seeks to connect the second generation of Dominicans living abroad with their cultural roots using folklore, handcrafts, dance workshops, and daytrips to historical sites and museums in the Cibao Valley and Puerto Plata. In addition to horse-riding and bonfires, this summer camp will teach Dominican traditions and values by playing local games, testing native dishes and fruits that are difficult to find in the United States, and learning about Dominican history, its geography and its regions.
The summer camp is organized by a team of Dominicans and Dominican-American professionals and will be conducted in Spanish to help Dominican-American kids improve their family language.
