Haiti bans egg and meat imports

A day after President Danilo Medina met with President Michel Martelly in Haiti for Environment Day and announced plans to work together to reforest the entire island, the country received the notification that Haiti was banning all imports of meat and eggs starting Friday, 7 June. The Dominican Republic is the leading vendor of poultry and eggs to Haiti.

As reported in Haiti Libre website, the measure was taken after a warning from the Public Health and Population Ministry (MSPP) in Haiti on the reappearance of bird flu (H1N1 virus) in the Dominican Republic. Importers and retailers were notified that the import and sale of meat products, particularly poultry, eggs and live animals potentially infected or carriers of bird flu, from the Dominican Republic are prohibited until further notice.

No cases have been detected in Haiti so far, reports the news service.
