Medina to study Labor Code and border incentives

President Danilo Medina met with representatives of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) yesterday, Thursday 6 June and agreed to create a commission of government, business and labor representatives to discuss modifications to the Labor Code. During the meeting, discussions also focused on following up on seven areas that affect local competitiveness that were raised in the II Congress of Dominican Industry held in Aril 2012. AIRD president Ligia Bonetti said that the commission would prepare a report on modifications to the code to improve competitiveness. The proposal will also include a modification to law 28-01 that granted incentives to companies that set up operations on the border with Haiti. The AIRD is opposed to these companies’ operation and has lobbied and successfully secured the cancellation of tax privileges to four companies, including a rum producer, operating in border provinces under the protection of Law 28-01. The incentives were created to stimulate the installation of industries in impoverished provinces.
