Dominican Ari Barshi won the Heineken Light Caribbean Laser Championships 2013 held 8-9 June in Orient Bay, Saint Martin. He competed against 25 sailors from all the Caribbean for the title of overall best in the race.
Also competing for the Dominican Republic were Jorge Abreu, Henry Fondeur, Omar Bros and Irina Bros.
The final race on Sunday started out with 10-12 knots and built up to 19 knots with heavy seas and big swell. After the final three races the overall winner was still to be determined at the very last race and, senior sailor Ari Barshi of the Dominican Republic would cross the line within centimeters of 17-year-old Kevin van Otterdijk from Curacao. Third overall was Masters winner Carlos Palambo from Argentina.
In the Masters Class Frits Bus from St Maarten and Jorge Abreu from Dom Rep filled in the second and third slots respectively.
The Caribbean Laser Championship is used by world class competitors to hone their skills for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in July.
