Four deaths cleaning septic tank

Yesterday, Sunday 9 June, four people died in San Pedro de Macoris, including three members of the same family, after inhaling fumes whilst cleaning a septic tank in their home.

The deceased were named as Martires Paredes Mota, 40 and his brother Manuel Paredes Mota (Noel), aged around 35, plus Francisco Mercedes Paredes (Ezequiel), their nephew and an employee, Jacinto Alfonseca (Nano).

According to reports, Alfonseca was cleaning the septic tank when he was trapped, apparently overcome by fumes, and the other members of the family tried to help him and then also died.

Civil Defense and the Fire Brigade attended the scene, removed the bodies and took them to the Antonio Musa hospital for post mortems.

Civil Defense members Yonaidi de los Santos and Edwin Ernesto Garcia Perez, who were also affected by the fumes, were taken immediately to the same hospital and were later released.
