According to the Ministry of Health, the United States has donated US$1 million to the Dominican Republic to strengthen the fight against AIDS, TB, malaria and other diseases.
The donation was made via the Presidential Emergency AIDS Relief Plan (Peofar) as part of an agreement between both countries, signed by the Health Ministry and the Regional Health Services.
One of the agreements allows for the purchase of laboratory equipment with funds from the US via the Dominican Center for Disease Control and another to strengthen support for the fight against TB.
Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo said that these initiatives form part of the government strategy to lower HIV and AIDS transmission rates in the country, as part of the Millennium Development Goals set out by the United Nations.
The Director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the Dominican Republic, Oliver Morgan, said that the laboratory equipment was part of the second phase of a project to detect the HIV virus in pregnant women.
