President Danilo Medina lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open what representatives called the “first stage” of Indomina Pinewood Studios in the Caribbean.
He toured the movie-making installations that are located at Km 64 of the Autovia del Este, in Juan Dolio, less than 40 minutes from Santo Domingo.
Felipe Vicini, president of the board of Indomina, thanked the government for its support for the country’s film industry.
The Dominican Republic facility boasts state-of-the art technology including a world-class water tank. The water tank is said to be the second largest in the world and has the most modern technology for filming
Since the passage of the Cinema Incentive Law in 2010 the number of features being filmed locally has grown from four or five a year to 23 in 2012, of which four were for non-Dominican productions. Productions are expected to increase to 30 to 40 a year soon.
