Drug trafficking is responsible for crime

Criminologist Daniel Pou says that the measure to send the military to patrol Dominican streets to reduce crime will not yield the desired results. He said that the trafficking and payment for drug trafficking is what has generated the increase in crime. In the past drug traffickers paid their distributors in cash, but for many years now the payment has been in drugs, creating a widespread local market.

Pou says that the military patrols are not a sustainable measure because the Dominican Republic is a tourism destination that cannot afford to give the impression of a nation at war. He said the militarization does not attack the root of the problem. He said crime has increased in the DR because for the past 15 years the same formulas have been used.
