The Larimar Surfing Championship was celebrated successfully at Los Patos Beach, in Barahona on 31 May and 1 June. Surfers from all over the country competed, representing Las Terrenas, Nagua, Rio San Juan, Cabarete, Sosua, Puerto Plata, Boca Chica, Bahoruco, Santo Domingo, Nizao, Bani and Barahona.
Junior Gomez took the Open Men division, Natalia Olmedo won in the Open Women category and Pascual Silverio conquered the Bodyboarding division.
The weekend event was organized by the Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) and conducted jointly with the Tourism Cluster of Barahona Province, and included two other sporting events: a paragliding competition with more than 20 pilots taking part, and a Lionfish fishing contest, with 10 teams of local divers from Barahona province competing.
The Larimar Surfing Championship used a computerized judging system. Nestor Puente, president of FEDOSURF, commented that the competition “elevated surfing and increased awareness of the natural wealth of Barahona, welcoming visitors and supporting the event. We congratulate all who participated.”
