Reporters from El Nuevo Diario newspaper talked to people in several barrios in Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 11 June and found that while they supported the policy of mixed Police-Military patrols on the streets, they also want more of them inside the barrios. The members of the public interviewed said that they felt safer as a result of the measures introduced by the National Public Safety Plan, but they pointed out that the patrols were almost entirely on the major thoroughfares. According to one person: “The patrolling is only on the main streets and they do not go much into the barrios… because there are places here where armed robberies are being committed, where they (the police) do not want to be permanently.” President Medina implemented the National Public Safety Plan on 21 March.
