Vice President Margarita Cedeno was in Rome on Sunday 16 June to receive a plaque from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in recognition of the Dominican Republic’s achievement of one of the targets set out in the Millennium Development Goals, which was to reduce the rate of hunger in the country by half. According to measurements taken by the FAO in the Dominican Republic, the country reduced hunger and malnutrition by over a million people. The FAO noted the focused social programs such as “Comer es primero” (Food comes first) as well as the school lunch programs. The Dominican Republic was one of 20 countries recognized at the FAO headquarters event. They are: Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chile, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Malawi, Maldives, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Togo and Uruguay.
FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva handed the diploma to Vice President Cedeno for meeting the Millennium Development Goal 1 of halving the proportion of hungry people.
