Mayor pushes for Metro to Santo Domingo East

The Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET) and the City Government of Santo Domingo East (AESD) will meet today, Wednesday 19 June for what could be the official announcement of the extension of Line 2 of the Metro system towards the capital of the province of Santo Domingo. The announcement comes ten days after mayor Juan de los Santos defended the impact that extending Metro Line 2 would have on the municipality. De los Santos stresses that the extension of Metro 2 line would have a major social and economic impact on the “municipality with the largest growth in the nation.”

“In view of the importance that this project will have, we are asking President Danilo Medina to order the work on the design so that there is time to finish it before he ends his term in 2016,” said De los Santos in a letter sent to the media. The Santo Domingo East mayor is a close ally of President Medina. De los Santos has been a fan of Line 2. According to reports, he has held lengthy meetings with the Administrative Presidency Minister, Jose Ramon Peralta at the Presidential Palace during the last few days.
