Dania Ramirez stars in new primetime soap

Dominican actress Dania Ramirez has one of the starring roles in a new Lifetime television drama series, Devious Maids.

The soap follows the lives of five ambitious Latinas who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Ramirez plays the role of Mexican maid Rosie Falta, an immigrant who had to leave her child behind to work in the United States after her husband died.

Two million people are estimated to have watched the premiere on Sunday night, 23 June. The soap has been accused of stereotyping Latinas, but one of the show’s executive producers, Eva Longoria said on her blog: “The only way to break a stereotype is to not ignore it”, and “this is a show that deconstructs the stereotype by showing us that maids are so much more.”

The show was created by Marc Cherry of Desperate Housewives fame.
