Hundreds of teachers led by the head of the Dominican Public Teachers Association (ADP), Eduardo Hidalgo, marched on the Ministry of Education in demand for wage increases, increased pensions and more transparency in the hiring practices. Hidalgo talked with reporters and explained that their protest is fair and announced that this march was the continuation of their struggle for better working conditions for teachers. He said that on Wednesday (today) they would march on the Presidential Palace.
One of the demands was a subsidy that would bolster the National Teachers Insurance Program (SEMMA) that owes over RD$30 million and cannot assist professors with serious illnesses. According to the Nuevo Diario, Hidalgo revealed that there were dozens of sections of the teachers that were without health insurance. Teacher Maria Teresa Cabrera told reporters that the Ministry has yet to define the salaries of high school and polytechnic school teachers.
