Over the last few months the Dominican Republic has became the regional leader in the installation of systems of renewable energy. This energy is sold to the power distributors by citizens and companies.
The president of the National Energy Commission, Enrique Ramirez, explained on Dialogo Libre, hosted by the Omnimedia Group, that the country is establishing a milestone, since its system of renewable energy is growing on an average of 200 kilowatts per month.
“The two-directional electricity meters that sell to the system total 5.5 megawatts, equal to the energy for Constanza and part of Jarabacoa,” said Ramirez.
The official indicated that on Wednesday they will inaugurate a 230-kilowatt facility in the Hotel Dominican Fiesta, and the Frederic Schad Shipping Agency will connect 460 kilowatts to the grid on 16 July.
He highlighted the solutions are very favorable for the environment and energy independence of the Dominican Republic. He argued that the dynamics of fossil fuel prices forces the country to have a mixed energy matrix with coal-fired generators, natural gas generators, but at the same time it should continue to stimulate new renewable energy capacity. “In this sector we should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time,” he said.
