The Ministry of the Environment headed up a program that has planted thousands of fruit and coffee trees in the watershed of the Yaque del Sur River, the largest river crossing the south of the country. The teams worked in San Juan de la Maguana province and planted more than 10,000 coffee trees, 5,000 avocado trees and 1,500 lime trees. According to Hoy newspaper, the first phase of this reforestation program took part in the communities of Los Gajitos, Ingenito, Palero, Sabaneta, Maguana Arriba and Maguana Abajo. According to the newspaper, the Ministry of the Environment will be taking similar programs to other watersheds in the country.
