Unions will go for 17% wage hikes

The National Committee on Salaries meets this Wednesday, 3 July to continue the talks on the increase in salaries for the employees in the private sector that receive minimum wages. Rafael Abreu (Pepe), the president of the National Council for Syndicate Unity (CNUS) said that he feels that the agreement depends on the flexibility the business sector shows at the talks. The last proposal by management was for a 12% increase, for the next two years, which was rejected by the workers’ representatives. “If the business sector wants an agreement of less than 17% which was achieved two years ago, the only way to do it is to have just a one year agreement,” said Abreu. Since February of this year, union representatives and management have met 12 times and the first proposals from management were for a salary increase of 5%, 8%, 10%, and one for 11%.
