The Peruvian national congress is to investigate a complaint about an alleged financial donation by Dominican Senator Felix Bautista to Peruvian former President Alejandro Toledo during his 2011 presidential electoral campaign.
The television program, Panorama has stated that Toledo’s party, Peru Possible (PP) received 12 checks from Bautista and showed three of them: one from the company Constructora Ingeniero Prescinal for US$55,000; another from Melvin Soler, employed by the company Hadon, for US$53,000, and a third in the name of Erica Tavares, who is supposedly related to Bautista, for US$60,000.
According to the report, Bautista personally handed some of these checks to Toledo.
Yesterday, Monday 1 July, in its digital edition, Peruvian media Diario Correo said that the Taxation Commission and Congress Audit Committee of Peru would be talking to the ex head of finances for the PP party, Javier Reategui, about the case.
Toledo is currently being investigated for another case involving his mother in law, Eva Fernenbug and the purchase of real estate.
A source close to Bautista in the Dominican Republic has denied that Bautista handed over the checks personally and said that they were in the name of Micalo Bermudez.
Bautista is secretary of organization of the ruling PLD party and key officer during the governments of former President Leonel Fernandez.
Speaking in his role as director at Citizen Participation civil society group, lawyer Francisco Alvarez has called Bautista “the symbol of corruption in the Dominican Republic.”
Locally, Bautista and his extraordinary fortune have been an untouchable by Dominican justice.
