What are known as “musicones” are causing residents in the area of Av. Espana in Santo Domingo East to complain to the authorities and the Diario Libre has now taken up their case.
Dona Maritza Vales bought a modest apartment because of what she described as the beauty of the Av. Espana area, some 25 years ago. But her dream of living in the Espana Residence, in the Ensanche Isabelita, faded some years ago. Now she wants to move somewhere else, very far away from this avenue. The reason: The music contests that the owners of vehicles engage in, after two in the morning, outside the businesses that sell alcoholic beverages, “Andy Sports Bar” and “Los Famosos.” Vales, who is a member of her condominium’s Residents’ Association, described how her family cannot sleep because of the thunderous volume.
When asked if she had complained to the National Police Anti-Noise Department, she said that they had not done anything, adding: “I bought this house and I want to move.”
The first person to complain about this situation was Angel Rivas, in an email he sent to Diario Libre. “On Espana Avenue, opposite the Residencial Espana, next to Andy Sport Bar, they have music contests and we cannot sleep. We have been abandoned by the authorities. He called on Santo Domingo East mayor Juan de los Santos, to intervene.
