Low-cost housing needs a push

Despite expectations, builders have not yet to be able to obtain access to pension fund money now authorized by the Mortgage and Trust Market (189-11). As reported in El Caribe, government entities (Ministry of Public Works, National Housing Institute and Department of Taxes) need still to coordinate their work. The president of the Builders and Housing Promoters Association (Acoprovi), Fermin Acosta criticized the fact that they still do not know the amount of the bonus that Law 189-11 would provide as incentive for builders. He pointed out that there is a deficit of over 900,000 housing units in the country. During his interview at the El Caribe Breakfast, Acosta asked President Medina to instruct the commission in charge of implementing the new law to shake off the lethargy that exists. He said that there is a demand for 68,000 units in Greater Santo Domingo alone.
