Fernandez says PLD will rule until 2036

Former President and president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Leonel Fernandez predicted that the political organization would remain in power until 2036. Speaking at the opening of the “Comandante Norge Botello” 8th PLD Congress, he forecast the ruling party would win the next presidential and congressional elections, set for 2016.

The VIII Ordinary Congress Norge Botello seeks to approve measures to reform, restructure, and reengineer the ruling Dominican Liberation Party, in this third round of modernization of the Dominican Liberation Party. Fernandez seeks the party as a factory for producing Presidents, legislators, and city council officers.

Fernandez admitted that there is a sort of unease, disgust, or discomfort with the PLD. He said he has received complaints that the committees of militants or affiliates have not been meeting. He said there has been breaches in the discipline and the solidarity that has always characterized the PLD rank and file.

For the former President, the party is not working with efficiency and discipline and unity due to the fact that since 1996 it has concentrated on winning the nine congressional elections. This has lead to institutional weakness within the party.
