Sonia Vasquez, the representative of the Population and Family Fund of the United Nations in the Dominican Republic, has advocated that public and private schools in the country should teach sex education, in an effort to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies. She said that the statistics show that out of every 1,000 women who are pregnant, 98 are teenagers, a proportion which is much too high. In fact it is only beaten by the number of teenage pregnancies in Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela in the region.
