On Friday, 12 July 2013, President Danilo Medina was in Puerto Plata for the unveiling of the expansion of Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) in Sosua. The expansion cost RD$536 million. The airport is managed by Aerodom, an affiliate of the Mexican company Advent International.
“The truth is that there has been a major refurbishment and expansion to the airport, especially at a time when we want to relaunch Puerto Plata,” Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina said at the launch.
Attending for Aerodom were Juan Carlos Torres Carretero, chief executive officer; Monika Infante Hneriquez, general director of Aerodom. Infante said that the RD$450 million invested in the terminal is part of the efforts to improve the standards of the airports, offering new facilities and services for passengers and customers, and in the interest of supporting the relaunching of Puerto Plata as a tourism destination. Another RD$86 million were invested to improve the 17,100 meters of the runway.
As part of the remodeling, new lighting and air-conditioning systems were installed, improvements in the customs and waiting areas of the second floor were made. There were also improvements made at the arrival and departure migration areas with the installation of 17 new counters at 34 check-in positions at the check-in hall. The terminal reconstruction was undertaken by the Puerto Plata firm of Maireni Bournigal & Co. and supervision by Nacional de Ingenieria y Tecnologia (Initec). The expansion encompassed 13,230 square meters of the terminal. It also included the construction of two new floors adding 5,200 square meters for new flight departure areas with capacity to service to flights at the same time.
Also attending the event was Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia, Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo.
