Deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal says that she will not comply with the PLD mandate to re-elect Abel Martinez as president of the Chamber of Deputies. The Central Committee of the ruling party recently ordered his re-election and that of Reinaldo Pared Perez (PLD-National District) as president of the Senate.
Tavarez says that she wants to see a sixth electoral win by the party with the passing of the Bill of Political Parties and the Electoral Bill. Both bills have stagnated in Congress. Aimed at regulating the operation of political parties, she says the bills would strengthen democracy and the parties themselves. She said that passing them could restore citizen confidence in the political party system. “We cannot allow ourselves the luxury of avoiding the discussion of the Bill of Parties and the Electoral Bill when our own institutionalism has been weakened,” she said, as reported in acento.com.do yesterday, Thursday 18 July.
She said that this weakness is now reflected in the recent decision by the party’s Political Committee to propose the re-election of the heads of both legislative houses.
Tavarez said the time has come to improve politics.
The ruling PLD party holds the majority in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
