Severance pay to stay

Speaking to Diario Libre newspaper editorial staff, Labor Minister Maritza Hernandez confirmed that the benefits that workers receive under the current Labor Code could only be improved.

She said she does not back eliminating severance pay, which business management say is duplicated by the pension plan. She does not agree with replacing it with unemployment insurance, as has been suggested.

She said that consensus between worker, employer and government representatives needs to be reached for any changes. She explained the National Commission for Employment, the Labor Consultation Board, the National Committee for Salaries were the three entities that dealt with labor relations.

She said it would be best to maintain economic balance, but that changes need to be agreed upon by all sectors.
