Government pre-qualifies six companies to build coal plants

The Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) says that it has pre-qualified six companies to participate in the tender for contracting two coal power plants. The contract is controversial as many say that this is old technology for power generation. The companies chosen are: China Gezhouba Group Company Limited, Posco Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., Consorcio Norberto Odebrecht, SA and Tecnimont S.p.A., Consorcio SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation, Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited and Dynamics Solutions (DR), S.R.L., CB&I Dominicana, S.R.L., Consorcio Mitsui & Co. Ltd. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.

Making the announcement, CDEEE executive vice president Ruben Jimenez Bichara said that the plan is to expand generation capacity with the installation of two 300-megawatt coal-fired plants. The estimated investment is US$1.5 billion.
