The Chamber of Deputies has passed legislation creating a new Ministry for Energy and Mines. Now it is up to the Executive Branch to study the proposal and either return it for modifications or publish it and make it law. The sweeping authority of the Ministry of Energy and Mines will have authority over such powerful entities as the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), the Superintendence of Electricity, the National Geological Service as well as any decentralized agency connected with energy or mining. Listin Diario reporter Ramon Perez Reyes says that the new ministry will take over the areas now under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and dealing with mining, energy or hydrocarbons.
