The Ministry of Tourism has announced details of the first phase calling for improvements in public spaces as part of a major urban renewal project for the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. The intention is to enhance the experience tourists have visiting this UNESCO world heritage site.
Speaking yesterday, Tuesday 23 July, architect Maribel Villalona said that this first phase would center on Isabela la Catolica and Arzobispo Merino, Presidente Billini and Arzobispo Portes streets. The project is being implemented with US$29.7 million in financing from the Inter-American Development Bank. Villalona said that the plan covers includes installing underground power and telephone lines, lighting, signage, new sewers, new parking, wider sidewalks and pedestrian areas. The entire program will take around eight months.
There will be improvements at the Ozama Fort, the Museum of Casas Reales, the Columbus Alcazar, and the San Francisco monastery ruins will become a cultural and events center.
