First Lady Candida Montilla was in Peru on Thursday and Friday (25, 26 July) where she visited the Centro Ann Sullivan (CASP) and signed an agreement on Friday, 26 July in Peru for support of the center to a similar program in the Dominican Republic. The CASP is seen as a model for Latin America. The CASP is a nonprofit educational organization that serves the community of people with different abilities (such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or developmental delay) and their families throughout their lives.
The Office of the First Lady is working to install Centers for Integral Attention to those with different abilities here (Centros de Atencion Integral a la Discapacidad). A first center is expected to open in Santo Domingo this summer.
Liliana Mayo Ortega founded CASP in 1979. She promised to visit in the future, probably for the opening of the first CAID in Santo Domingo. A second CAID is under construction in Santiago.
