Economist Miguel Ceara Hatton observes that the growth of the Dominican economy has generated more government jobs than private sector jobs. As reported in Hoy on Saturday, 27 July, Ceara said that while there was an increase of the GDP of 1.82%, employment only grew 1.31% from 2000 to 2012. Of the 272,000 formal jobs created, 65% were created in government, and only 35% in the private sector. He said this means there has been an increase in political patronage kind jobs. He said that otherwise, 69% of new jobs are in the informal sector.
He alerted that the 100,000 new jobs proposal made by the government is not enough. He said that if in 2013 GDP grows the expected 3%, unemployment would be at 15.5%, and if it grows at 2%, as forecast by the IMF, then unemployment would be 16.3%.
