The Dominican Republic has banned imports of shrimps in any stage of development and presentation from China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico.
According to authorities, the measure was taken due to outbreaks of the so-called early mortality syndrome (EMS) of shrimp or acute hepatopancreatic necrosis syndrome (AHPNS) in those countries.
Agriculture Minister Luis Ramon Rodriguez made it clear that imports from the United States and other countries where shrimps are duly certified have not been banned.
According to the Minister, if the disease were to enter the country it might endanger local shrimp production.
The measure, said Rodriguez, is based on recommendations from the regional office of the World Organization for Animal Health in the Epidemiological Surveillance Program
