Do Chinese businesses in the DR have an unfair competitive edge?

Representatives of the Association of United Businessmen marched in protest yesterday, Monday 29 July, against the tax advantages that apparently are enjoyed by Chinese businesses throughout the country.

Iris Espinal, spokesperson for the Association that groups business people from Jose Marti, Duarte, Concepcion, Bona and the neighboring area, complained that the Chinese do not pay taxes, which gives them such a competitive advantage that they have grown by 72% in the last few years.

They also asserted that the money the Chinese earn is usually sent overseas in the form of remittances that means they contribute less to growth in this country.

The business people marched from Concepcion Bona Street on the corner with Duarte and in front of the Presidential Palace from where they demanded that President Danilo Medina intervene in this situation as their businesses were facing bankruptcy.

Espinal said that although the situation was of most concern in the Capital, it was also prevalent in Santiago and other parts of the country. She explained that the protest was not against the businesses in Chinatown, but against the owners of around 72 businesses disseminated throughout the country.
