Economist Ernesto Selman asks for end to the trade ban by Haiti

Economist Ernesto Selman is calling for an urgent solution to the bans imposed by the Haitian authorities on products imported from the Dominican Republic. He said the bans are not only affecting Dominican businesses but also millions of poor Haitians that now need to pay more for consumer products.

Selman, executive vice president of the Regional Center of Sustainable Economic Strategies (CREES), speaking at the end of a conference on Causes and Consequences of the International Financial Crisis, talked about the unjustified ban on the import of poultry, eggs, plastics and other Dominican products when he says that there should be a free flow of goods and services.

He said that it appears that the political system in Haiti is not working well, as when they talk about managing interest groups it appears that these groups are putting pressure on the political system to adopt these measures. In consequence, he says there needs to be a political response from the Dominican Republic.
