Hipolito asks the Electoral Court to suspend CEN meeting

Today, Wednesday 31 July the Higher Electoral Court (TSE) will disclose the result of a request for the suspension of the National Executive Committee (CEN) convention, called for by PRD president Miguel Vargas Maldonado at the Carlos Teo Cruz Boxing Coliseum for tomorrow, Thursday 1 August at 8am.

The request was made by former president Hipolito Mejia and another 64 leading PRD party members. Mejia also asked for the lists of CEN members submitted to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) on 18 May 2012 and June 1 this year to be suspended immediately.

The CEN convention was announced at a press conference held at Party headquarters by a committee headed by Julio Marinez, who said that member registration prior to the meeting would start at 6am.

He said that the list of the 2,307 members who were registered in the CEN could be found on the party website www.prd.org.do

The Mejia political team says that President Danilo Medina, former president Leonel Fernandez and Vargas are responsible for the consequences that might be caused by the reactions of “the PRD grassroots”, but the police have guaranteed the security of those attending.

At a press conference, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, Orlando Jorge Mera and Andres Bautista said that the convention called by Vargas is invalid as his presidency ended on 19 July, as he has no right to call the CEN or any other PRD organism. They said that they would announce their next political steps at 10.00 this morning.

At the last convention called by Vargas on January 27, there was shooting, chairs were thrown and windows broken and the Party Headquarters were occupied, which resulted in at least five people being injured.
