The Dominican ambassador in the United States, Anibal de Castro, says that the world is rapidly changing with major transatlantic trade agreements soon to be signed. Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting yesterday, Wednesday 31 July, he said that the DR needed to be more proactive if it is not to be left out. He recommended that the DR position itself as a supplier to larger markets, transshipment and logistics center, making the most of its central geographical position.
In recent months, the Dominican Embassy has worked with the textile sector in the DR and colleagues in Central America to express our concerns about negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) that will affect textile trade, he reported. The participants in the TPP are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States. The TPP seeks to enhance trade and investment among the TPP partner countries, promote innovation, economic growth and development, and support job creation and retention.
