American Chamber of Commerce president Maximo Vidal says that the business group will promote the signing of a trade agreement between the DR and Haiti as a key instrument for growth and economic stability. Haiti is the country’s second largest trading partner, but recently the Haitian government began imposing barriers on trade. Vidal said that Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD) statistics indicate that in 2012 the DR formally exported more than US$1.134 billion to Haiti and imported around US$62 million. He said that exports to Haiti were 16% of the total Dominican exports, while for Haiti this totalled 30% of imports. “As Haiti is our second largest trading partner, we should not keep a system that has proven to be vulnerable and limiting to formal trade and especially unpredictable,” he commented.
