DR athletes to 14th World Championships

The Dominican Athletics Federation and the Dominican Olympic Committee have expressed their satisfaction at the news that the Dominican Republic will be competing in the IAAF World Athletics Championships for the first time. This year the leading athletics event will take place in Moskva (Luzhnik), Russia from 10-18 August.

The delegation of 10 athletes will leave next Monday, 5 August, to take part in the games.

The women’s 4×100 quartet is composed of Marleny Mejia, Marielys Sanchez, Fanny Chalas and Margarita Manzueta, who qualified for the event with a time of 44.86 seconds in a recent competition in Canada.

Also making the trip is the men’s quartet for the 4×400 with Arismendy Peguero, Gustavo Cuesta, Yon Soriano and Luguelin Santos (silver medallist at the 2012 London Olympic Games).

In addition, Felix Sanchez (gold medallist at the 2012 London Olympics) will compete in the 400 meters hurdles, Luguelin Santos in the 400 and 200-meter flat and Marleny Mejia will run in the 100 and 200-meter flat races.

Dominican Athletic Federation president Gerardo Suero Correa said that the objective is to fight for two medals and see what happens in the 4×400. He said that the athletes were in top form and thanked the Creso group for their support in helping with their preparations and delegation costs.
