PRD conflict continues

PRD members who support former president Hipolito Mejia have called their own National Executive Committee meeting for 10am tomorrow, Friday 2 August at the Los Prados Club in Santo Domingo.

In a press conference held on Wednesday 31 July at the Jose Francisco Pena Gomez Institute, the former acting president of the PRD, Andres Bautista declared that the true membership of the CEN, based on the list that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) received last week would be meeting today, Thursday 1 August. Bautista was accompanied by former President Mejia, Orlando Jorge Mera and PRD Political Committee members. The group reiterated that Miguel Vargas Maldonado, together with President Danilo Medina and former President Leonel Fernandez, would be responsible if anything happened at the CEN convention called by Vargas at the Teo Cruz Boxing Coliseum today, Thursday 1 August.

In the meantime, the Higher Electoral Court (TSE) ruled that the action brought by Mejia’s followers was inadmissible.

Salim Ibarra, representing Vargas Maldonado, defended the outcome and disqualified Hipolito Mejia from calling a CEN meeting as he was not a member of the PRD.

In the meantime, lawyer and leading party member Emmanuel Esquea Guerrero, representing Mejia and the other 64 party members said that the ruling showed that Miguel Vargas was “a partner of the government and the PLD”.
