Heatwave to continue

According to the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) the heat wave will continue across the country with temperatures between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. They recommend that the population drink plenty of liquids, wear light clothes and avoid being in the sun from 11 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

The Minister of Public Health Freddy Hidalgo Nunez also recommends drinking lots of water, even if you are not thirsty, avoiding over eating, eating sweet things and drinking alcohol.

He also said that the people should take special care of babies, small children and people over 65 and those with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

The highest temperatures have been registered in the National District, and the provinces of Santo Domingo, La Romana, Santiago, Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata and Samana, with 34 degrees Celsius. In La Altagracia, San Juan and Barahona it has reached 33 degrees.

The heat is due to dry air across the countr because there is a layer of dust from the Sahara desert according to Onamet, which is preventing the formation of vertical clouds and hence rain.
