More government scholarships for Dominican students

In a bid to reduce the large (33%) group of young people known as “ni-nis” by the national press (they neither study nor work), President Danilo Medina has announced the start of a Presidential Scholarship Program as of next year. This announcement came as the President presented 5,272 students with scholarships for study at overseas and national universities. He spoke at the event held at the Volleyball Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center yesterday.

According to the President, 33% of the nation’s young people are neither working nor studying (ni-ni in Spanish) and this program is aimed at reducing that number. The President, accompanied by Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo, gave some 3,000 students scholarships to Dominican universities and 2,000 scholarships to universities in the United States, Europe and South and Central America.
