The City Government of Santo Domingo (ADN) and the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) are now using new technology to discourage parking in restricted areas. A report in Listin Diario says that the clamps are used to immobilize a vehicle. The clamps are placed between the vehicles’s tire and chassis. The use of the clamps is part of a plan to recover public spaces in Greater Santo Domingo. The clamps are being used for vehicles parking on sidewalks, obstructing house entrances, double-parking, among others. A tow truck then picks up the vehicles and takes them to parking areas located at the intersections between Luperon and Independencia, Independencia with Maximo Gomez (Villa Juana) or the Canodromo El Coco (Av. Monumental and Republica de Colombia).
The plan is to recover the public space taken over by drivers in Villa Juana, Villa Francisco and Villas Agricolas.
To claim back the vehicle, the owners must pay high penalties.
