Why is JCE waiting to let Evangelical churches marry people?

The Dominican Council for Christian Unity (Codue) is asking the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to allow them to celebrate weddings as authorized by Law 198-11 on religious marriages. Fidel Lorenzo, spokesman for Codue says thousands of Evangelical Christian couples who worship in the 18,000 registered Evangelical churches, await the day their pastors can officiate their weddings.

Lorenzo said that 350 ministers have been trained but have yet to be licensed by the JCE. Another 1,600 pastors have registered for training, but the JCE says it does not have the funds to continue the process. Lorenzo said that the JCE recently announced it had made savings of RD$100 million in its operation, so he says those funds could be used to train and certify the pastors and the clerks who will register the process.
