Thousands of Dominicans and other Latinos lined Sixth Avenue (the Avenue of the Americas) in New York City yesterday, Sunday 11 August to celebrate the Dominican National Parade. Marchers and spectators waving national flags, playing typical merengue musical instruments and even holding plantains all celebrated the day together with people dressed in devil costumes and other carnival characters. The event started with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg cutting the ribbon to launch the parade of some 60 floats and the marchers down Sixth Avenue. Famous personalities including Milly Quezada, Tono Rosario, Rubby Perez, Luis Vargas and El Prodigio took part in the demonstration of national pride for Dominicans who live overseas. Even politicians got into the mix with city council candidate Miguel Estrella and leading PRD member Luis Abinader making appearances.
