Authorities shut down 260 nightspots

The Ministry of Interior and Police says that more than 260 colmadones (shops that sell liquor), discos and other nightspots were shut down in the first six months of the year. Drugs, firearms, the presence of minors, obstruction of traffic, noise pollution and violation of liquor-vending hours were the main reasons for the temporary or permanent closure of these establishments. The authorities also seized music equipment and imposed fines on thousands of businesses across the country. Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul said the operations would continue as part of the Comprehensive National Security Plan. He said that every weekend they close down 30 to 40 places, many for two and three months, and others permanently. He said that 98 businesses have been closed in Greater Santo Domingo.
