Dominican migration authorities will be implementing the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) system at all ports of entry starting 1 September 2013, announced Migration director Jose Ricardo Taveras yesterday Tuesday 13 August, as reported in El Caribe. The system enhances border security by providing officers with pre-arrival and departure manifest data on all passengers and crewmembers. Taveras says that as of 1 September all airlines need to provide the advance list of their passengers prior to boarding. “The country has been exposed to weaknesses, especially in regards to the entry of people sought for crimes abroad because we did not have the technological platform to exercise adequate control,” said Taveras during a meeting with airlines. He said this tool enables the country to interact with law enforcement agencies around the world, including the International Police (Interpol). He said that a pilot implementation of the program already enabled the country to deny entry to 40 known sexual predators in the past two months.
