The Dominican Republic celebrates its independence from Spain tomorrow, Friday 16 August. DR1 Daily News will not be updated as it is a national holiday. Headline news happening over the weekend will be compiled for the Monday, 19 August issue.
Restoration Day commemorates the Dominican victory in the guerilla war against Spanish troops and government. The Spanish had taken control in 1861 following a petition made by Dominican General Pedro Santana who feared that the Haitians would regain control given the country’s hard economic times.
President Danilo Medina will be in Santiago for a Te Deum at the Santiago Cathedral and other commemorative events marking the 150th anniversary of Restoration Day.
