According to data from the National Immigration Survey carried out by the United Nations Population Fund and the Caribbean Study Center, there are 524,632 immigrants in the Dominican Republic, which is equivalent to 5.4% of the population, estimated at 9,716,940 inhabitants.
According to the report, the Haitian population is 668,145 while citizens of other countries total 100,638.
The report goes on to say that illegal immigrants total 244,151 which is 2.5% of the population.
There are 209,912 descendants of Haitian immigrants and 34,239 descendants of other nationalities.
According to the study, the total number of immigrants and their descendents is 768,783, equivalent to 7.9% of the population.
Haitian ambassador in the Dominican Republic Fritz Cineas has gone on record with the press estimating there are over a million illegal Haitians living in the Dominican Republic. According to information provided by the Ministry of Public Health’s Regional Heath Service Statistics Service, a Haitian baby is born in the Dominican Republic every 12 minutes. In 2012 a total of 43,852 Haitians were born, 28,207 by caesarean section and 15,655 natural births.
Likewise, US Embassy records show there are more than 200,000 US citizens living in the Dominican Republic.
