JCE replaces civil registration judge

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has dismissed Judge Jose Angel Aquino from his post as coordinator of the Official Civil Registrations Committee and replaced him with Cesar Francisco Feliz Feliz.

The substitution, approved by three votes to two, came as the result of a report by a committee of legislators, that questioned that Dominican citizenship that had been granted to 22,673 citizens of Haitian descent be revoked.

JCE president Roberto Rosario Marquez read the Deputies’ resolution saying that he had looked at it all and that it was certain that the JCE had not invalidated the birth certificates in question.

Rosario was emphatic that they had to show themselves to be transparent in the operation of the JCE and that the Committee involved was led by Angel Aquino and that his participation in a Regional Course on Stateless Persons, organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in April, in Costa Rica was imprudent and inappropriate and untimely.
